Police superintendent Jody Weis has recently caught flack for meeting w/ refuted Westside gang leaders in an attempt to reduce the violence on the streets.  The move, or threat as some view it is part of Chicago’s Gang Violence Reduction Initiative.  During the meeting, Weis warned gang leaders like Labar “Bro Man” Spann, an alleged Four Corner Hustlers leader and Jettie “Bo Diddley” Williams, the 50-year-old reputed leader of the Traveling Vice Lords to stop the killings or life for them would become miserable.

To carry out his threat, Weis told the gang leaders to remember the word RICO, and how homes, cars and other assets would be seized while conspiracy cases were brought upon gang leaders.  Many of the gang leaders in attendance said there’s no way I can be held responsible for what someone else does, and even hinted at the fact that they can’t control the young gang members.  After keeping up w/ this story, it’s interesting that gang leaders have really shown their true colors as being powerless (food for thought).

So is group responsibility a good way to quell the violence amongst rival gang members, senseless crimes, and other horrible behavior?

Should gang leaders be held responsible for the actions of the members below them & could this method work?

No Recession For War In Afghanistan

In the 8th year of the war on terrorism today is a reminder that Iraq is not the only concern for the U.S. armed forces. Violence in the country of Afghanistan is has sharply been on the rise in the last few months. Following the deaths of troops from a roadside bombing and militant attacks, a total of 44 US troops have died in the month of August tying it with July for the bloodiest month so far.

Just 7 days have passed since the August 20th election votes for the new leadership of the country were cast. With more than 60,000 troops now occupying the country’s most dangerous areas for insurgents, one can only hope the results of the election will resurrect peace.

How often have we heard this storyline in Chicago?  Senseless violence takes another child’s life.  Its an all too familiar headline, and until we change some things about ourselves and our environment, things will never change for the better.

The picture from above was of Justin Daniels.  He was a 17 year old student of Brooks College Prep Academy, who was focus on environmental change and getting good grades.  All that shifted on this past Saturday after hanging out w/ a girl he had just met at the Museum of Science & Industry.  She was having friends over and she told two of her male friends to go get pizza.  After the night was up those same guys needed rides home.  As they went through the alley, one guy said “Let’s do this”, while the other put a gun to his head saying “Gimme everything you’ve got”.  Next thing you know the kid w/ the bright future ahead of him is dead & now police officers have the two men in custody facing first degree murder charges.

When will we learn that robbing someone is not the answer.  It’s a shame that another student doing something positive w/ his life had to die over something so small & trivial.  The two robbers, Dennis Davis (16 years old) & Cortez Reed (17 years old) will now probably spend the rest of their lives in jail & if they do get out of jail, they’ll have a very hard time finding employment.

C. Breezy Pleads Guilty

APTOPIX People Chris Brown

Today was yet another chapter in the Chris Brown v Rihanna saga.  Today, Chris Brown pleaded guilty to one count of felony assault on Rihanna 10 minutes before the case was scheduled to start. Chris Brown left the court as Rihanna entered the room.  He goes before the court again on Aug. 5th to be sentenced.  According to the media, the guilty plea calls for CB to  serve five years of  probation and six months or 1,400 hours — of community labor. He will be able to complete his probation in his hometown Virgina by either doing graffiti removal or roadside cleanup.

And don’t think he’s getting off easy because an LA County district attorney says that these are the charges for someone with no prior criminal background.  A stay-away order was also issued for the both of them, with the judge telling them both that they cannot be within 50 yards of one another.  In cases of entertainment events, they are permitted to be within 10 yards of each other.  All of this could have been avoided if Chris would have calmed down and thought about his actions & consequences.  Fellas wake up!!!  Hitting a woman is not cool!!!

MJ & kid

I remember when Micheal Jackson dangled his baby over his balcony overseas and the first thing that came to mind was “what is he thinking” and “that isn’t too responsible”. This morning I ran across an article about a 13-year old boy who was struck and killed by a car.   The 13 year old boy was fatally struck right off 84th & Ashland, dying on the scene at 1:41 according to the Sun Times.  It made me ask the question, “why was a 13 year old out late at 1:41 am?”  At that age, a kid is either in 8th grade or a freshman in high-school, so why was he out that late?  More importantly, where were his parents and what were they thinking.  Chicago lost more than five lives yesterday (Thursday May22nd) due to gun violence.  All in all, this situation and more could of been avoided if more responsibility was taken.

Something has to change people…

Why does Hot=Shot?

This past weekend 6 people were killed and almost a dozen more were injured as a result of gun violence in Chicago. This past weekend was also some of the warmest weather the city has seen this year. So what is it about the sun being out that puts people in the mood for killing each other? What could change it?
