2010 BET Awards Recap: The Comeback?!?

The 2010 BET Awards aired on Sunday night, and while I’ll say I wasnt that much impressed, a few performances did leave a lasting impression.  It was good to see Kanye West finally back in the spotlight, after the whole Taylor Swift fiasco.  His performance though was pretty dull and boring, kind of like watching wet paint dry.  Alicia Keys was probably one of my favorite performers of the night, as her tribute to Prince was amazing.  How many pregnant women do you know, who can climb atop a piano and still perform at a high level.  Other notable performances included El DeBarge (who went through his old hits and some new music), Drake (new artist sensation who performed “Over”), Ludacris, and Dirty Money (who had the most smoke I’ve ever witnessed during a performance).

The performance that left a lasting impression though was Chris Brown’s tribute to MJ.  It served as a transformation period for the young star, and left many wanting more.  It was almost eery to watch him imitate MJ’s every dance move, including the moonwalk.  He seemed effortless and back in his element (as a performer on the big stage).  When he had the chance to woo the audience even more, he began to breakdown and cry.  Perhaps due to the fact of how he idolized MJ, or maybe b/c he felt sorry for all his mishaps.  Whatever it was, he sure made a lasting impression on everyone who witnessed his performance (some good, some bad).  Maybe, he’ll be able to make a comeback after all.

Nearly one in four young, black, male high school dropouts are incarcerated or institutionalized on an average day.

Have you ever contemplated this thought before? How about heard someone say it, like your close friends or peers.  It’s something many of us are familiar w/ these days but we all should think long and hard before we actually do it.  Many times, when I go into high schools, or upper level classes, students are moreso nonchalant, sometimes look sleepy or uninterested.  When I see these things happening and ask students what else could you be doing instead of going to school, I always get the same answers: sleep, watching tv, getting money, having fun, the mall, etc. All things that won’t get you to the next step in life (i.e. College, finding employment, etc).

Kanye West first album was titled, "The College Dropout"

By dropping out of school or not taking school seriously, not only do you put yourself at risk (ex. dangerous situations because you have more time on your hands, may get caught up in the wrong crowd, etc) but you also increase the likelihood of going to jail down the line.

Nearly one in four young, black, male high school dropouts are incarcerated or institutionalized on an average day. A new study by Northwestern University shows that about one in every 10 young male high school dropouts is in jail or juvenile detention, compared with the slim one in 35 young male high school graduates.

It’s time to step it up people.  Just because something is difficult to accomplish, whether it be school, your environment, finding a job, getting accepted into college, and so on, doesn’t mean that hurdle cannot be overcame.  Here’s a quote that a friend once told me: “Failures don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.”  Let’s set our goals and accomplish them together.

Choice Words

This past week has had its share of shocking random moments and unexpected statements. From the “You Lie” outburst Rep. Joe Wilson to the harsh Hall of Fame acceptance speech of Mr. Jumpman himself. We want to know which one you thought was most “yeah you could have kept that one” worthy.

On Sunday, Taylor Swift was accepting her first VMA Award for Best Female Video, when Kanye West showed how big his ego truly was.  He interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech to let everyone know that “Beyonce had one of the best videos of all-time” and she should have won.  My first thought was he doesn’t get it.  I’m a big time Kanye fan but he just doesn’t get it.  It’s not always about him, and this time he hurt himself and someone else’s first time to experience in winning an award.  Just because things don’t go your way, you don’t have the right to throw tantrums, interrupt shows, or be disrespectful.  Now Kanye’s reputation is once again tainted. I hope this teaches him a lesson on how to carry himself as a professional b/c after this MTV may not want him back at their award shows.  Here’s his apology from Jay Leno’s show:

Last night, the supergroup of Jay-z, Rihanna, and Kanye West performed Run This Town on the premiere of Jay Leno’s return to late night talk tv.  They all did their thing.

Law Named After Kanye’s Mom

Donda Kanye

Law makers in California have written a bill called the “Donda West Law” that would require medical examinations to be performed no more than 30 days prior to cosmetic facial surgery. The law is named after Dr. Donda West, who died in 2007 from contemplations following her surgery. The passing of the law will require final approval by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger sometime this year.

Ricardo Marchan was very upset after the breakup w/ his girlfriend.  So what did he do? Kick & scream…No.  Get into petty fights…No.  Carry an attitude w/ everyone…Well, kinda.  He went on a violent rampage that resulted in the deaths of two innocent people.  He shot Michael Hernandez (an 18 year old planning on heading to college) in the back on the head and Patrick Cregan (a pizza-man who was on the job at the time) in the back of the head as well.  Both died instantly.  But the heartless Marchan didn’t stop and even robbed two guys on Aug 2nd.  After firing shots in the air, to prove the gun was real, police ran onto the scene and captured the twisted former boyfriend.  Tests revealed his gun was used in the two previous murders and now the heartless individual faces 2 counts of murder and one count of armed robbery.

Violence is never the way, especially when trying to vent out frustration and anger.  Never act on emotions but instead harness that energy and learn from it.  The results can be dreadful and cost you your life.  Just ask Ricardo Marchan.  Was the breakup w/ his girlfriend so heart-wrenching that two people had to die?  I know she’ll never want him back now, if ever a time she did!

In the words of Kanye West “How could you be so heartless?”
