2010 BET Awards Recap: The Comeback?!?

The 2010 BET Awards aired on Sunday night, and while I’ll say I wasnt that much impressed, a few performances did leave a lasting impression.  It was good to see Kanye West finally back in the spotlight, after the whole Taylor Swift fiasco.  His performance though was pretty dull and boring, kind of like watching wet paint dry.  Alicia Keys was probably one of my favorite performers of the night, as her tribute to Prince was amazing.  How many pregnant women do you know, who can climb atop a piano and still perform at a high level.  Other notable performances included El DeBarge (who went through his old hits and some new music), Drake (new artist sensation who performed “Over”), Ludacris, and Dirty Money (who had the most smoke I’ve ever witnessed during a performance).

The performance that left a lasting impression though was Chris Brown’s tribute to MJ.  It served as a transformation period for the young star, and left many wanting more.  It was almost eery to watch him imitate MJ’s every dance move, including the moonwalk.  He seemed effortless and back in his element (as a performer on the big stage).  When he had the chance to woo the audience even more, he began to breakdown and cry.  Perhaps due to the fact of how he idolized MJ, or maybe b/c he felt sorry for all his mishaps.  Whatever it was, he sure made a lasting impression on everyone who witnessed his performance (some good, some bad).  Maybe, he’ll be able to make a comeback after all.

According to Rolling Stone Magazine, Chris Brown was sentenced to five years probation and a 180 days of physical labor after pleading guilty to charges stemming from the February 8th incident in Los Angeles.  But get this, Chris Brown openly admitted this wasn’t the first time the two were violent w/ one another.

The first incident between Rihanna and Brown occurred in Europe, with the couple engaging in a verbal dispute. Rihanna eventually slapped Brown, who responded by allegedly shoving Rihanna against the wall. The second incident, which occurred three weeks before Brown’s pre-Grammy assault on February 8th, took place in Barbados. Driving in a leased Range Rover, Brown and Rihanna reportedly got into an argument inside the car. Brown responded by exiting the vehicle and breaking the front driver side and passenger windows.

Let this be a lesson: Guys if you have to hit a woman, you shouldn’t be with her.  Women if you have to hit a man, he is not the right one for you.  Don’t get caught up in volatile and physical relationships b/c the results could cost you your live and livelihood.

Thoughts on the sentencing…Speak Up!!!

Next Best Thing?!?

When the King of Pop was living, many fans and critics believed Chris Brown was the closest thing to him.  He moves like the MJ, is a great performer, young & talented like Michael and had alot of positive things going his way.  With his recent volatile and messy breakup w/ Rihanna though, he hasn’t been as successful.  I’m not fully convinced that he’ll bounce back from his career ending actions w/ Rihanna but he sure reminds me of MJ in a few ways.  Here he is at P. Diddy’s all white party over the weekend, dancing to “Thriller”.

On Thursday, June 25th we lost the Greatest Entertainer of All-Time.  Michael Jackson died at the age of 50 at a Los Angeles Hospital.  His 1982 album “Thriller” which included the blockbuster hits “Beat It,” “Billie Jean” and “Thriller” remains the biggest-selling album of all time, with more than 26 million copies.

I remember trying to do the moon walk in my socks as a child growing up, never being able to fully emulate Michael’s effortless touch.  I also remember how everything stopped on TV when his video “Scream” w/ Janet Jackson premiered.  He gave his all in every performance and loved his fans and everyone across the country.  He was a philanthropist, one who wanted to end racism and racial barriers, a father, and a loving son.  Since his death his album sales have soared tremendously, as fans want some sort of memento.  Every artist today, from Britney Spears, Chris Brown, Usher, and more all took bits and pieces from MJ’s performances and all owe him a great deal.  The King of Pop will always be missed!!!

A few of his accomplishments:

  • “Thriller” is the second-best-selling album in U.S. history, at 28 million. Only a greatest hits compilation by The Eagles has sold more.
  • Thriller is the only album in the United States to have sold more copies than any other in two separate years, topping the sales charts in 1983 and 1984.
  • Four of Jackson’s albums, Bad, Dangerous, HIStory, and Invincible, debuted at number one in the United States.
  • Jackson was the first artist to have four Top 10 singles from one album (Off the Wall).
  • Jackson was the first artist to have seven Top 10 singles from one album (Thriller), a feat matched only by his sister Janet and Bruce Springsteen.
  • Jackson was the first artist to simultaneously have the number one album and number one single on Billboard’s Pop Charts and Black Charts.
  • Jackson was the first artist in the 1980s to have two simultaneous Top 5 hits (“Beat It” and “Billie Jean” on April 16, 1983).
  • Jackson had nine number one singles in the 1980s, more than any other artist during the decade.

One of my favorite MJ hits!!!

C. Breezy Pleads Guilty

APTOPIX People Chris Brown

Today was yet another chapter in the Chris Brown v Rihanna saga.  Today, Chris Brown pleaded guilty to one count of felony assault on Rihanna 10 minutes before the case was scheduled to start. Chris Brown left the court as Rihanna entered the room.  He goes before the court again on Aug. 5th to be sentenced.  According to the media, the guilty plea calls for CB to  serve five years of  probation and six months or 1,400 hours — of community labor. He will be able to complete his probation in his hometown Virgina by either doing graffiti removal or roadside cleanup.

And don’t think he’s getting off easy because an LA County district attorney says that these are the charges for someone with no prior criminal background.  A stay-away order was also issued for the both of them, with the judge telling them both that they cannot be within 50 yards of one another.  In cases of entertainment events, they are permitted to be within 10 yards of each other.  All of this could have been avoided if Chris would have calmed down and thought about his actions & consequences.  Fellas wake up!!!  Hitting a woman is not cool!!!
