On April 19, 2010 Hip-Hop pioneer Guru joined Tupac, Biggie, Jam Master J and a host of others as fallen marters in Rap Music. At the age of 43 he passed away from complications due to cancer. Guru had been hospitalized several times in the past year for various health problems including a heart attack that left him restricted to Good Samaritan Hospital until his death.

Guru is most known for being 1/2 of the group Gang Starr founded in the late 80’s, including himself and the World renowned Producer DJ Premiere aka “Premo”. But the group had many shaky times leading to its eventual public split in 2004. Controversy began to emerge as fans and family became suspicious of new-found ally DJ Solar, suspecting him of controlling Guru’s visitations preceding his death. The drama peeked after Solar released a statement claiming that Guru wanted nothing to do with DJ Premier even after his death. The letter, supposedly in the words of Guru read…

“I do not wish my ex-DJ [DJ Premier] to have anything to do with my name likeness, events, tributes etc. Connected in any way to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well-informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.”

Whether or not Guru was actually behind the letter or not it definitely will leave a bad taste in the mouths of many Gang Starr fans in a genre where beefs and grudges thrive many times until death. Nevertheless Guru is a Rap pioneer often pushing the limits of social awareness and history. Guru’s solo career produced a Hip-Hop and Jazz fusion series entitled “Jazzmatazz” collaborating with legends such as Roy Ayers and Donald Byrd. Guru’s impact and legacy will live on for generations, inspiring and strong, he will be remembered as a legend.

Half Of City Schools Closing?

This week marks the second consecutive announcement of mass school closings in a major city. Last week officials in Kansas City voted to close 29 educational facilities including 26 schools. Today Detroit upped the ante by signing off on the closer of 44 schools in the coming years. This is in addition to the 29 schools also closed in Detroit last year.

A high funding deficit of  $316.6 million as well as low enrollment in the Detroit public school system are named as leading factors in the decision. The district reports that it has close to 50,000 empty seats and wants to make things more efficient by cutting back. Emergency financial manager Robert Bobb stated that the plan would allow the district to cut cost by $31 million dollars this year alone and also cut down the deficit in years to come. This plan also includes bond money that would be used in the remodeling of over 20 aging schools as well as for building new ones. After it’s all said and done the district promises to strive for a 98% highschool graduation rate and 100% college acceptance rate. Perhaps wishful thinking but hopefully the pros out wiegh the cons of  redirecting thousands of students and staff.

I hear this debate all the time over “should marijuana become legalized”?  And the answer in my opinion is no for a variety of reasons.  The main reason though is due to the physical and psychological effects that marijuana has on the body. I’ll give you the short version: Marijuana’s active ingredient is THC, which is fat soluble.  This means, THC clings to the fattest organ(s) in the body which happens to be the brain.  This causes weed users to easily forget new things they’ve learned and a lot more effects.  Enough of the scientific talk though, back to our regular scheduled program.

A clergy (full of Chicago religious figures and leaders) and police officers have joined forces in the fight against marijuana and illegal paraphernalia.  They’ve recently backed a ban which is being pushed to the General Assembly to classify blunt wraps (as seen above) to be classified as drug  paraphernalia.  These wraps come in various flavors and are said to target urban youth.  That combined w/ the fact that they are inexpensive and can be found at any convenience store or gas station, and its no wonder they’ve raised so many eyebrows.

“Having this product in mainstream stores is like having drug pushers in our neighborhoods,” Bishop Larry Trotter, the pastor at Sweet Holy Spirit Church, said today. “Blunt wraps are an indefensible product marketed to children and entirely identified with illegal drug use.”

By allowing “blunt wraps” to be legally sold in stores, you’re saying to consumers we know that some may use marijuana, so here’s what you need to use that particular drug.  It totally goes against the law which says that possessing, manufacturing and/or distributing marijuana is illegal.

Weigh in and tell us is it ok to make marijuana illegal, but allow for items associated w/ it to be legally sold in stores?  What should happen next?

Well, Tiger has made headlines again. No, no, no! I’m not talking about new allegations or sex scandals.  He recently released a five paragraph statement claiming his return to the golf course. He will return to the game of golf for the biggest stage…”The Master’s”.  I don’t know about you but I know networks such as ESPN and CBS are jumping up and down like excited children, while thinking of the ratings this guy is about to bring in.  Just think about the reaction from his peers, the news media and the fans.  This will be an event for the ages.

Gilbert…Gilbert…Gilbert.  Just a few years ago, you were the face of your franchise, competing for playoff pushes, and showing fans why you have a chance to gain a scoring title. My, have times changed.  In a recent Esquire Magazine interview Gilbert Arenas revealed that he deserves to be punished for bringing guns to the locker room, and went on to say that he wasn’t using “longevity thinking” when he took out four guns in what he says was an attempt to play a prank on a teammate.  Arenas pleaded guilty to a felony gun charge in January and will be sentenced next week. He has been suspended until the end of the season by the NBA.

OMG…It seems that the athletes these days come straight from the video games these days w/ the dunks and antics they attempt. Check these out and tell me if which dunk was better:

For those thinking about a career in law enforcement, here’s some new insight.  You know how when you hear police sirens coming from blocks away, and then next up you see a Crown Victoria zooming down the block? Well, pretty soon we no longer will be seeing those Crown Vic’s anyone because they are getting phased out.  New police cars w/ the latest advancements in technology plan to be introduced under Chicago’s Ford plant on Torrence.  The new police interceptors will be Ford Taurus models designed to be faster, safer & stronger.

New upgrades:

  • It will have a V-6 engine that produces 263 horsepower
  • The gear shifter is on the steering column to free up space between the front seats for gear.
  • The rear door panels swing out 10 degrees farther than on a regular Taurus to make it easier to get detainees in and out.
  • Larger trunk to accommodate equipment.

Paula Deen catches the Ham

I believe this particular pass play is called the Ham Mary.  During a charity event yesterday in which celebrity chef Paula Deen was helping to unload 25,000 pounds of meat at an Atlanta food bank, one of the workers needed a football break. He threw a ham to her. Actually, at her. He hit Deen in the face.

“I haven’t met the ham that could stop me yet!”

Mike Tyson gets into airport scuffle!?!

Former boxing champ was arrested Wednesday afternoon for doing what he did best….boxing.  That’s right!!  It seems that while switching flights after coming back from Europe and headed to Las Vegas, Tyson got into it with a celebrity photographer who was constantly following him around.  According to the paparazzi, Tyson punched him once in the head.  Mike Tyson says the photographer was very aggressive when taking pictures.  Both were placed under citizen’s arrest and face misdemeanor charges.
